Very Brief Psychotherapy, by James P. Gustafson

As the fields of psychiatry and clinical psychology are increasingly driven by the economics of the HMO or Mental Health Center, practitioners in any setting, whether it be private practice or university clinic, are now forced to develop more concrete procedures and models in order to practice more efficiently. This book presents a set of procedures for brief therapy that are based entirely on the four common dynamics of psychiatry. By following the model set forth in this book, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, and mental health workers will be able to build an entire brief therapy program based upon the initial conditions for each patient.

In Very Brief Psychotherapy, Dr. James Gustafson provides the reader with the tools and techniques to make a discernable difference in a patient's life in only a few moments. The majority of people seeking help from mental health professionals are not pathological, but are most often stuck in self-imposed cyclical patterns of behavior from which they cannot escape. It is the first step in any situation that leads to the iteration of the familiar circle, and it is in this single step that the clinician can effect decisive change. Given a window of only five or ten minutes, the practitioner armed with this approach can help a patient break out of the repeating pattern, move around the impasse, and take the first step onto a new trajectory. Very Brief Psychotherapy can help the practitioner make meaningful interventions in real world time, and in less than ideal circumstances, will radically change the reader's concepts of what can be accomplished in a day, in a clinical hour, or even in a single moment.

Review
'Very Brief Psychotherapy is engagingly written, clinically astute, and theoretically brilliant. Jim Gustafson shows how, with one step - the right step - patients can do something different to break out of their painful, reiterating traps. Highly recommended.' - Michael F. Hoyt, Ph.D., Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, USA

One of the best series ever!
By James
The idea behind Endworld has encouraged many more titles such as the book Swan Song and even the movie The Day After. It is an interesting read that deals with a group of people living in a very fictional post apocalyptic future. A future that has mutants, mutated humans, a crazed Russian army along with tons of other interesting hurdles they must cross in order to stay alive. It has rich detailed characters, interesting action and some nice jokes. While it is not Shakespeare as far as the writing is concerned, it is fast paced and can keep you interested. Do not read this series if you are going to worry about details and unrealistic action. This book is in the sci-fi area for a reason. I recommend the first one to everyone I know, for the simple fact it is worth the time to look it over

Action in the post-WWIII world
By Larry Eischen
This is the 1st I've read by Robhbins and I intend to be back for more. It's action in postwar Minnesota as Blade, Geronimo and Hickock undertake a mission to find out what else is left outside their compound. Great touches abound-killer mutant squirrels, gladiatorlike combat with Wolverines and living killer clouds all make the world of Blade a living hell. In a surprising twist, the heroes are given a mission early on and by the end of this actionfest, they haven't even started the mission; thus promising plenty of action to come. Nice touch.

Keeps you on your toes just waiting for the next thing.
By A Customer
One of the best adventure scfi.books I've ever read, and I collect this series, and try to get all of the ones that follow in it. This one kept me on the edge of my seat, and couldn't put it down to do anything till I'd finished. One of the things I like about all of them is that they fasten on to you from the minute you pick them up till you finish, and then you hunt everywhere just to get the next one;as you don't want to miss a single thing that will happen to the FamilY! Please let the author know that they are a well loved books, and that his fan's would like more of them!

Erotic Comics 2: A Graphic History from the Liberated '70s to the Internet, by Tim Pilcher, Gene Kannenberg

For over four decades, erotic comics have flourished around the world. Erotic Comics 2 examines how this budding art form exploded from the California comix scene to become an international publishing phenomenon.
Beginning with an exploration of newly liberated American artists in the '70s, this overview examines the gay and lesbian comics scene, current artists and publishers in Europe, and Japanese erotica. After delving into the sexual mores of Japanese Hentai: from tentacle sex to Yaoi, the book looks to the future, where erotic comic creators are sidestepping legal issues by producing work solely for the Internet.
Filled with rarely seen art from international forerunners such as Dave Stevens, Jordi Bennet, Frank Thorne, Tom of Finland, Ralf Kšnig, and Milo Manara, Erotic Comics 2 is perfect for fans of adult  comics, art history, and erotic illustration. As Alan Moore urges in his foreword: "Absorb the contents of this book, and do so shamelessly."

An Illustrated History of Hardcore 'Toons
By Roochak
The most intelligent question I've ever known anyone to ask about sexually explicit comics comes from writer Alan Moore, who's spent his professional career leading the way for his peers. "Is there a way," Moore asked in 1993, "of doing pornography that is sexually arousing, is not offensive politically, aesthetically, or in all those other ways, that can speak to women as well as men, that can have characters, meaning, and a story the same way as ordinary literature?" The answer is yes, but proving it in a finished comic is another matter entirely, which is why most artists don't try and most readers don't seem to care. (Moore and artist Melinda Gebbie may have accomplished that difficult task in their epic porn comic, Lost Girls Hardcover Edition, which I plan on reading now that it's in an affordable edition.)

The second volume of Tim Pilcher's history of erotic comics covers the mid 'seventies to the present, and the theme that emerges in this survey is that while depictions of hardcore sex have become commonplace, the average sex comic is as stupid and boring as the average porn video; only the fetishes have become increasingly fractured, and more extreme in their presentation.

Chapter one covers the USA from the deathblow that Stan Lee, with the backing of the Nixon administration, dealt to the Comics Code Authority, through the mid 'nineties, when competition from the internet made it increasingly difficult for erotic comics publishers to make a living. In those years, nothing was off limits, unless you made the mistake of drawing or selling porn comics in the Bible Belt, which necessitated the birth of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Elsewhere, things were going so well that even mainstream publisher DC Comics got into the act with such pioneering Vertigo titles as ENIGMA and THE EXTREMIST.

Chapter two covers the rise of gay and lesbian comics, from Howard Cruse and Tom of Finland to Alison Bechdel. The next chapter celebrates European erotica, a class act in terms of its draftsmanship, at least until we get to Spain: for some reason, Spanish porn comics look amateurish next to their French, Italian, and Argentinian competition.

Chapter four is Pilcher's ambivalent look at Japanese hentai, which he seems to find disgusting and/or boring in equal measure. (Curiously, the yaoi [gay male] panels are better drawn than anything else reproduced in this chapter.) The book concludes with a brief look at erotica online, a field in which we are all experts.

The front dust jacket illustration, a typically gorgeous nude by Giovanna Casotto, is worth the price of the book by itself.

Erotic comics
By Kurt Geeraerts
Interesting overview of this matter, although I expected more a critical analysis on the history of erotic comics. I'm very happy I met Giovanna Casotto in this book. She's amazing: she's a woman herself, she masters her drawing skills and she's not vulgar, but very ... erotic.

Nice-looking but silly mistakes in the Japanese section
By Caitlin
I ordered this book because I am working on research Japanese pornographic comics and I thought it would be a nice gift to myself to learn a little bit about Western erotic comics. The book is large, well-printed, and it would make an excellent coffee table book, if you are the sort of person (like me) known to all your friends to be a fan of porn and comics.

But, having read the sections on the Japanese side, I'm not sure if I can trust the info on the European/American side!

Maybe that's not fair. The issue with the Japanese section is not quite the information: a lot of the copy is okay, simplified and exoticized, but that's what I would expect. Some of it is wrong or silly, but I'm sure if I made a list of specific complaints, I would be accused of academic quibbling.

The bigger problem is, hilariously, the pictures! First of all, the lolicon page doesn't show any examples of lolicon, which is not surprising given the sensitivity of the material and the difficulty it poses to publishers, but putting artists like Mizuno Junko on a page explicating lolicon seems disingenuous and confusing -- she's a ladies' mangaka or a cute-horror artist, not in lolicon at all AFAIK. Even the Yui Toshiki and Kondom examples aren't lolicon, though they're at least primarily pornographic artists; I'd put them in a section on monster/animal or general weird body erotic manga. Still, it makes sense that the publisher would hesitate to publish lolicon, even in non-erotic examples.

More surprising, however, are the pages on shounen ai and yaoi: there's one image of a cover of June, an appropriate example, but all the other images are of gay manga, a separate and very distinct genre! Gay manga are comics about gay men written by/for gay men and generally emphasize size and masculinity; shounen ai and yaoi (really, BL) are about gay men but written for women and usually feature feminized men or boys. If you've ever seen Kaze to Ki no Uta, an example of 70s shounen ai mentioned in the description, you would be shocked to see it illustrated with images by Tadame Gengoro, a prominent gay manga artist: the characters in Kaze are young beautiful boys and the sexuality is more suggestive than explicit, while the illustrations by Tadame here show hairy, muscular men engaged in explicit penetration. Gay manga is a very interesting and underpublicized genre (in the West and in Japan!), so it would have been great to see a section on it in this book, but using it to illustrate shounen ai is strange and shows that Pilcher wasn't really interested in researching shounen ai/yaoi/BL enough to find good and interesting examples of erotic art within the genre(s).

Anyway, I'm still looking forward to the rest of the book, but I just wanted to warn everyone else not to rely on the info or the images too much. I know it's not an academic text, so I was ready to laugh off simplifications/mishaps in the writing, but the image mistakes are just silly and unfortunate.

The Truth About Middle Managers: Who They Are, How They Work, Why They Matter, by Paul Osterman

Middle management" is a term associated with relentless downsizing, corporate drudgery, and career dead-ends. Bashed by management gurus, dismissed by social scientists, and painted as victims by the media, middle managers seem permanently relegated to the sidelines of corporate power.

But is this popular picture accurate? Are middle managers really no longer valued by today's performance-driven organizations?

The truth is surprising. MIT management scholar Paul Osterman has analyzed over thirty years' worth of employment data, interviewed a wide sample of managers, and uncovered a very different picture of middle managers today. Not only have their numbers increased dramatically, but middle managers are wealthier, more productive, more autonomous--and they gain real pleasure from their day-to-day work.

But there's another side to the story: while managers have maintained their commitment to their tasks and to their colleagues, they are increasingly cynical and distant from their organizations. They are confused about their future and how to manage their careers. This comes at a time when the value of middle management is much greater than ever before. Organizations must rethink their understanding of this vital workforce segment--now.

Understand the issues for yourself with The Truth About Middle Managers' refreshing and counter-intuitive look at what's really going on.

Are Middle Managers Going the Way of the Dinosaurs?
    By Bryan Carey
Business books about management are numerous, to say the least, and a large percentage of these books focus on the different theories about management; what works, what doesn't work, and what the future holds for different managerial schools of thought. Many management books are highly skeptical about middle management and some have even suggested that middle management is an institution whose time has passed. But should middle management be tagged in such a negative way? One person who feels differently about middle management and has the research to back his claims is MIT professor Paul Osterman. He wrote The Truth About Middle Managers because he wanted to share his research with the reader; research that flies in the face of the modern- day wisdom saying that middle managers are a thing of the past and should be eliminated from most businesses as quickly as possible.

I have read some of the negative literature about middle management and why it is supposedly a level of management that needs to be eliminated. I have also debated others on the role of middle management and why it is important to the success of a company. Most take the side that says middle management is a hinderance to corporate efficiency and should be scaled back, but this book has an entirely different point of view. This book takes a stand in favor of middle management and it offers statistics and official research to back its claims. The author has studied management for some time and, according to his research, middle management is not only important, its numbers are increasing. There are a larger percentage of middle managers today than in the past and this trend is likely to continue over time. Many readers will find this difficult to believe, given the talk about eliminating layers of middle management by certain large companies, but there is statistical data to back it up.

Why are middle managers so important? This book offers several reasons why, but it really comes down to one important fact: The critical decisions that middle managers make every day, directly affecting the day- to- day functions of a company. Upper- level management, such as CEO, CFO, CIO, etc., make important decisions, too, but not to the numeric degree that middle managers make decisions and these decisions, taken together, are crucial to the success of any company. I can certainly confirm this, based on my own experience as a middle manager. In my years working in management, I have made hundreds of small decisions. They probably didn't seem like much at the time, but when all of these decisions are added together, they equal a sum that is far greater than the individual parts. The role of middle management is changing and security in the job isn't as good as it was in the past, but there is no denying the importance of this layer of management.

The Truth About Middle Managers is written in a very academic way. Some will find this style a little boring, but as a part- time educator and adjunct professor, I like this writing style and the author is very effective in his delivery. This book is written from an intellectual angle and there is no doubt that the author obviously knows what he is talking about. He is not only intelligent, but his delivery is logical and reasonable. I also like that this book defends the importance of middle managers. Far too many books bash middle management and claim this level of management is on the way out, even though reality paints an entirely different picture.

The Truth About Middle Managers is a very good, very well- written volume about middle management and the importance of maintaining a middle management level in all companies. Middle management makes important decisions on a daily basis and these decisions can have a significant impact on a businesses' bottom line. This book discusses the importance of middle management, its changing role, and its future with a good deal of efficiency. It is a little on the dry side, but the academic nature of this book makes it a good choice for those who want to know the facts and want some tools to guide them as they make future management decisions.

    Nothing Earth Shattering
    By Karie Hoskins
When I chose this book, I though that as a middle manager, I would gain some insight into my work niche, but I find having finished it, that I don't feel that I learned much. I am guessing that this book is better directed to HR employees/managers, and that they might get more out of the graphs and statistics that I did.

The book ends, seemingly in the same place it begins, saying that most middle managers are committed to their jobs and colleagues, but that they have lost much of their commitment to their firms and are suspicious of upper management. But...isn't this true of the workforce as a whole? Aren't we all, management or no, recognizing that there is no loyalty to be had from most companies and that upper management (speaking here of CEOs in particular) is living in an entirely different universe than the average American worker?

Again, I am perhaps not the right audience for this book, but I just didn't find much that was enlightening regarding either my day to day life or career as a middle manager. Times have changed for employees, on all levels of the org chart.

I did find one section that really struck home, though. In defining "middle managers" - Osterman does it well. "Middle managers are responsible for both internal and external management of teams, act as the transmission belt between the top of the organization and the bottom, and make day-to-day choices and trade-offs that escape the attention of top management yet are central to the organization's performance."

    Too true, too true.

Middle Managers History, Review and at a Cross Roads
    By Joseph J. Slevin
Reading Paul Osterman's book 'The Truth About Middle Managers' gave me a sense of frustration and hope with the future state of Middle Managers and American business.

Osterman gives us a very close view of middle managers, historically, from the growth of middle management ranks and through the changes that bring us to today.

We have a view of the first really strong organization that was General Motors and the changes that occurred to have middle managers be the glue that kept large matrix organizations with its many divisions humming. We see the changes and the way things were after WWII in the 50s and 60s where there was 'lifetime' employment and the pyramid to todays more flatter organization.

Paul Osterman looks at Managers from a number of industries and interviews a few to get a composite of how managers look at their new opportunity or plight. He shares with us the impact and insights on those managers who have gone through reorganizations and mergers and acquisitions. What changed, what was better and what was worse or just what was different.

He then shows us the perspective of managers and their careers and views of the future and the organization. Telling is the disparity of top management pay with all others and the view that managers old and new have of the organizaions they work for. I was surprised to see that managers look more at loyalty to their team verses that of the overall company today. Also, instead of upward mobility, we have breadth or at least the opportunity to continous growth on a professional level with new things coming all the time.

Whether there is a 'what have you done for me lately?' perspective or loyalty for what you have done for a company, Middle Management has been and still is a very important part of organizations today.

This is a great book for addition to management studies. Anyone in middle management, HR, Training and Development and business consulting would want this in their library. Osterman gives us views from so many angles and this could really lead to new and deeper work on the subject. Enjoy reading 'The Truth About Middle Managers.'

It only takes a few hours for Turner Buckminster to start hating Phippsburg, Maine. No one in town will let him forget that he's a minister's son, even if he doesn't act like one. But then he meets Lizzie Bright Griffin, a smart and sassy girl from a poor nearby island community founded by former slaves. Despite his father's-and the town's-disapproval of their friendship, Turner spends time with Lizzie, and it opens up a whole new world to him, filled with the mystery and wonder of Maine's rocky coast. The two soon discover that the town elders, along with Turner's father, want to force the people to leave Lizzie's island so that Phippsburg can start a lucrative tourist trade there. Turner gets caught up in a spiral of disasters that alter his life-but also lead him to new levels of acceptance and maturity. This sensitively written historical novel, based on the true story of a community's destruction, highlights a unique friendship during a time of change. Author's note.

Grade 6-9-From the sad and shameful actual destruction of an island community in 1912, Schmidt weaves an evocative novel. When Turner Buckminster arrives in Phippsburg, ME, it takes him only a few hours to start hating his new home. Friendless and feeling the burden of being the new preacher's son, the 13-year-old is miserable until he meets Lizzie Bright Griffin, the first African American he has ever met and a resident of Malaga Island, an impoverished community settled by freed or possibly escaped slaves. Despite his father's and the town's stern disapproval, Turner spends time with Lizzie, learning the wonders of the Maine coast. For some minor infraction, Turner's father makes the boy visit elderly Mrs. Cobb, reading to her and playing the organ. Lizzie joins him, and this unlikely threesome takes comfort in the music. The racist town elders, trying to attract a lucrative tourist trade, decide to destroy the shacks on Malaga and to remove the community, including 60 graves in their cemetery. The residents are sent to the Home for the Feeble-Minded in Pownal. When Mrs. Cobb dies and leaves her house to Turner, he sets off to bring Lizzie home, only to find that she died shortly after arriving at the institution. Turner stands up to the racism of the town. His father, finally proud of him, stands with him-a position that results in the reverend's death. Although the story is hauntingly sad, there is much humor, too. Schmidt's writing is infused with feeling and rich in imagery. With fully developed, memorable characters and a fascinating, little-known piece of history, this novel will leave a powerful impression on readers.

*Starred Review* Gr. 7-12. Turner, the rigid minister's son, doesn't fit in when his family moves from Boston to the small town of Phippsburg on the coast of Maine in 1912. It's not only that Maine baseball is different from the game he knows; he's just plain miserable. Then he makes friends with a smart, lively young teen, Lizzie Griffin, living in a small, impoverished community founded by former slaves on nearby Malaga Island. When the town elders drive Lizzie's people off the island, Turner stands up for them, but he can do nothing. Lizzie eventually dies in an insane asylum. The novel may be too long and detailed for some readers, with every plot strand and character accounted for. But the removal of the Malaga community really happened, and Schmidt weaves that history into a powerful tale of friendship and coming-of-age, adding a lyrical sense of the coastal landscape. Characters are drawn without reverence in this haunting combination of fact and fiction that has a powerful and tragic climax. Hazel Rochman

Richie's Picks: LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY
    By N. S.
"From so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved."
--Charles Darwin, THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES
"Like angels appearing in the sky,
    whales are proof of God."
    --Cynthia Rylant, THE WHALES
Because it is based upon a series of true, race-related events in Maine during the early 1900s, LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY might make you think of Karen Hesse's WITNESS. Several of the "good guy" characters--Mrs. Carr and the elder Mrs. Hurd, for example--have a charm reminiscent of the idiosyncratic folk in BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE. But, because of the depth of the evil behind the tragic real events upon which the fictional story of Lizzie and Turner is built, the feelings of despair and anger with which we're left evoke memories of such books as MISSISSIPPI TRIAL, 1955 and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.
The enchanting Lizzie Bright Griffin, a girl of great strength and few words, belongs to the youngest of many generations of African Americans who have called Malaga Island home.
"Lizzie held close against her grandfather as the people of Malaga Island came out from the pine woods, gathered around their preacher on the shore to hear what had been said. Before they turned, Lizzie felt her grandfather ebb as though his soul were passing out of him, the way the last waves of a falling tide pass into still air and are gone. "She took a deep breath, and she wasn't just breathing in the air. She breathed in the waves, the sea grass, the pines, the pale lichens on the granite, the sweet shimmering of the pebbles dragged back and forth in the surf, the fish hawk diving to the waves, the dolphin jumping out of them.
    "She would not ebb.
"Then she turned with her grandfather to tell the gathering people of Malaga that times had moved on, and they would have to leave their homes."
Across the water, on the mainland, Turner is the new kid in town. And even worse--from his perspective--he's the new minister's son.
"Turner Buckminster had lived in Phippsburg, Maine, for almost six whole hours.
"He didn't know how much longer he could stand it."
Here, as with the fight over the towers in Elaine Konigsburg's THE OUTCASTS OF 19 SCHUYLER PLACE, the root of conflict involves money and property values. Phippsburg's shipbuilding industry is dying, and the local "boys with the bucks" reckon that tourism may be the source of future prosperity if only the "less desirable" portion of the community can be run out of town.
" 'Would you look at that monkey go? Look at her go. She climbing down or falling?' Deacon Hurd watched the last leap to the ground. 'Sheriff Elwell, I believe she thought you might shoot her.'
" 'Wouldn't have been any trouble, Mr. Hurd. One less colored in the world.' "
The character who is most difficult to decipher in this story of Turner's coming of age is his father. Reverend Buckminster was hired by the church leadership and is supposed to be serving God. However, he is being pulled in various directions: by the white community, by his own knowledge and conscience (or sometimes lack thereof), and by the beliefs of the maturing son he apparently loves, albeit in a stiff, 1912 Congregationalist ministerial fashion.
"And suddenly, Turner had a thought that had never occurred to him before: he wondered if his father really believed a single thing he was saying.
"And suddenly, Turner had a second thought that had never occurred to him before: he wondered if he believed a single thing his father was saying."
Reverend Buckminster is but one of several characters who end up throwing Turner a curveball.
The innocent, against-all-odds friendship that develops between Turner and Lizzie repeatedly caused me shivers, delight, and despair. It is first among the many reasons why LIZZIE BRIGHT AND THE BUCKMINSTER BOY is an entertaining and important piece of YA historic fiction. (...)

The price of learning what the whales already know
    By E. R. Bird
Having finally finished, "Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy", I see now that the 2005 Newbery year was one filled with books for older child readers. Whether those readers are into racism or autism, the subject matter of the winners was particularly complex and mature. And in none of these winners is the subject more mature than in "Lizzie Bright". Basing this tale on the true events that occurred on Malaga Island, just off the coast of Maine, the story is a thoughtful look at the meaning of racism, friendship, human connection, and loss. It's not going to strike the kids who read it as a cheery devil-may-care book. But its magnificent writing keeps it from becoming another "Kira-kira" sob-fest. In any case, it's the kind of story that'll give you reason enough to stop, think, and consider.

According to Turner Buckminster's calculations, he was in his new home of Phippsburg, Maine for approximately fifteen minutes shy of six hours when he realized that, "he didn't know how much longer he could stand it". For one thing, he's the son of the town's new minister. And when you're the minister's son you're expected to be the soul of virtue. Turner's not a bad kid, but he has a heck of a way of getting into trouble. It's only when he escapes to the seacoast and meets Lizzie Bright Griffin that things start to look up. Lizzie's one of the black people living on the tiny island of Malaga, just off the coast of Phippsburg. It's a poor community (this is 1912, after all), but they get by. Unfortunately, the town's been losing money and it seems the Buckminsters have been hired by the city's fathers to help them in their goal of ridding Malaga of its inhabitants so as to set it up as a tourism site. That means throwing Lizzie and all her neighbors off the only home they've ever known. As Turner comes to terms with what it means to shrug off the scandalized eyes of the townspeople, as well as his parents' disapproval, he learns that for all the sorrows life may hand you, there can sometimes be salvation in the blink of a whale's mysterious eye.

Now there's some pretty heavy-handed subject matter going on here. You have perfectly nice little old ladies and young lively black kids being carted off to insane asylums (1912 insane asylums at that). You have several major characters die, usually off-camera, without so much as a howdy-doo. You have evil presented as godliness (topical considering the times in which we live), and the good of the almighty dollar aligned with God's supposed will. And that's not even touching on the racism issues, the human rights issues, and the rights children have in the eyes of the law. This is a book about bullies and how one stands up to them. I think what I really loved about "Lizzie Bright" was that Schmidt never took the easy road out. There aren't any miracles here or unexpected changes of heart (save one, but it's believable). People in this book are a set of contradictions, but for all that they do bad things they may not always be bad people per say. Bad things happen to good people, and they happen a lot. If you don't want your kids to know this, then you may as well grab the nearest Dick and Jane compendium and pretend that history never happened. But if you want to give them a well-informed, sometimes dark, but always interesting novel to peruse, this is it.

Now I did have some qualms here and there. There's nothing I hate more than an author/filmmaker/playwright/etc. who relies on that old "magical-black-friend" motif. You know the one I'm talking about. You'll find it in any story where an uptight white person meets someone of a different race and suddenly gets in touch with the earth/their feelings/what's really important/and so on. And there is a bit of that here. There's also the fact that there's rarely a black person in this book who comes off as anything but saintly. I like my characters to have a little depth to them. A little good and bad. But here the blacks sort of fall under the "victim" banner and never leave it. I wish they had as much complexity as, say, Turner's preacher father, but there doesn't seem to be much chance of that. Still, Lizzie's okay. She's kind of a likable version of that gawdawful "Ida B" (another children's book that came out in 2004 and that you should avoid at all costs). Lizzie gets mad at inappropriate times and she's never as nice to Turner as she should be, so when I say that the African-Americans in this tale never show enough depth, I'm excluding the title character. Lizzie's a fascinating character, and one that you wish you saw more of.

This is a book to spark some highly hepped up debates. You may well find yourself shaking with anger on one page and sighing with infinite relief on the next. Schmidt really defines himself here as one of the finest children's authors living today. When you read the line of a character who asks, "So, Turner Buckminster III, when you look through the number at the end of your name, does it seem like you're looking through prison bars?", you cannot help but smile. Perhaps this book will not be remembered as Schmidt's best, though. I have a feeling that as an author he'll have a lot more to say to the children of the world. Let's hope they're bright enough to listen.

The best children's book in years
    By Rowena Ravenscroft
I teach both children's lit and young adult lit at my university, so I read hundreds of children's books a year. This is the best book to come along for older children in quite awhile; I simply can't fault any aspect of it--style, character development, pacing, plot, honesty--it's all here.

As has been pointed out by a couple of other reviewers, it is simply shocking that Kira Kira won the Newbery while this book was a runner-up. When I was grousing about that fact to a librarian, she told me that the Newbery is often won by a compromise book, because the better books have such passionate devotees on the committee that they cancel each other out. I can't help but think that's what happened this year with Lizzie Bright and Al Capone Does My Shirts, both of which are far superior to Kira Kira.

The worst thing about Kira Kira is its irritating writer's-workshop postmodern minimalist style--that and I don't think actual children will like the book at all. At my own public library it has languished on the shelf for months, checked out only once--by me. Lizzie Bright, on the other hand, is not only always out, but has a waiting list of potential child readers.

If you are a parent or a teacher, order this book immediately. It is destined to be a classic, a real jewel in a sea of mediocrity.
