Interesting, but formatting is not the best

Excellent travel memoir about travel around the region in the title. It dates to 1910, and gives an interesting look at the area before WWI. It's a little rambly and goes off on tangents, but worth the read.

However, the formatting is not so good. There's the usual sort of OCR scan problems, although that isn't too bad. There are also stray lines popping up and unforntunately, no working Table of Content or chapter breaks.

Still, worthwhile if you're interested in the area and/or American interactions in it (specifically missionaries).

From the Foreword: Some things are so obvious they elude our scrutiny. The act of breathing, for example, is so automatic, and the air we breathe so invisible, that we tend to overlook them until some respiratory crisis brings them to our attention. It can be the same with our understanding of the Bible. Especially amongst evangelicals, whose high view of Biblical authority can lead to proof-texting, it is easy to get caught up in the minutiae and forget to stand back and look at the larger picture, what John Wesley called "the whole scope and tenor of Scripture." Thus Christians can be filled with details about Biblical teaching, but fail to comprehend those over-arching themes which place these details in perspective. This situation can lead to serious misinterpretation of Biblical doctrine.

What, after all, is the purpose of the Bible as a whole? What motivated its appearance within the religious community we call Israel, and the new Israel of the church of Jesus Christ? Scripture came into being as an expression of the relationship between God and His people, a relationship which the Bible typically portrays in terms of the covenant or its equivalents: the kingdom of God, the family of God, new life through membership in the Son of God. Although the Bible may focus on a variety of issues and concerns, all of these have their meaning within the ebb and flow of the covenant relationship between the Lord and those who have pledged their loyalty to Him in worship and obedience. In this sense, covenant is the air which Scripture breathes; it supplies the framework and the thematic material for understanding all parts of the Old and New Testaments.

The present volume draws upon earlier studies, but takes the further step of applying the concept of the covenant to the Bible as a whole, both Old and New Testaments, not just historically but in a thematic and theological way. The result is a frequently amazing clarification of the meaning of Scripture in whole and in part. Excellent Book For Understanding Covenant

In I Will Be Their God, J. E. Leonard shows how the entire Bible is written from the perspective of covenant. Covenant is the "air" that the Bible breathes: a basic understanding of how covenant works is assumed in it's stories just as air is assumed in any story about living people. In a day when covenant is so little understood, this book is a must read to properly understand the context in which the Scriptures were written. It is reader friendly but filled with profound insights in understanding the concept of covenant.
Leonard takes archeological finds to show how the concept of covenant was the way people thought for thousands of years, especially in the years in which the Bible was written. With this understanding, it is easy to see how the stories of the Bible - Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus - are all about God's covenant with His chosen people. This ultimately affects how we interpret "end time" books of the Bible such as Revelation.
The Bible sure makes a lot more sense when understood from this perspective.

Beginning with Mann's Buddenbrooks as a family chronicle novel that fully embodies the classical genealogical structure, the author extends her analysis to include distortions of the linear perspective in Lawrence's The Rainbow, Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!, Nabokov's Ada, or Ardor, and Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. She finds that in these novels about family relationships, the continuity of time, family, and story has dissolved so that past, present, and future have lost their distinctions; sins against the dynastic family are not only recognized but celebrated; and literary and existential meanings are suspended in unlikely juxtapositions, irrational metamorphoses, and proliferating possibilities. Professor Tobin suggests that the disappearance of the genealogical imperative in the contemporary world's sense of reality may account for much of what appears to be anonymous, peripheral, and excessive in post-modern fiction.

An academic study

This book is an academic study of 'Time and the Novel'. It devotes chapters to Mann's 'Buddenbrooks' to Faulkner's 'Absalom Absalom' to Nabakov's'Ada or Ardor' and to Gabriel Garcia-Marquez's 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'. Its initial claim is that contemporary criticism has seen the great transformation of the modern novel in terms of Space. Tobin attempts to extend this into studying the modern Novel's transformation of ordinary genealogical Time into one which is broken into many different perspectives.

I found this book extremely difficult to read and understand.

I tried for a close reading of the Faulkner chapter but here too I was stymied. One problem was that the author seemed to assume the reader completely familiar with the story and characters of the work.

For a different kind of treatment of 'Time and the Novel' I would look to the classical study of Mendilow.

The songs remain the same....

This is pure anorak territory for avid Bolan/TRex fans and i guess i don't fall into that category. I was anticipating slightly more focus on Marc the man rather than a song-by-song analysis. Of course the clue is in the title but still i was hoping for more of an insight to the workings of Marc's mind and attitude towards band members which was notoriously harsh on occasion.

If you live and breath Bolan's music then you will love this; it is extremely well researched and very thorough. Definitely worth a punt if you're that way inclined.

A Woman's Life in Slavery

Harriet Jacobs' (1813-1897) "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is one of the few accounts of Southern slavery written by a woman. The book was published in 1861 through the efforts of Maria Child, an abolitionist who edited the book and wrote an introduction to it. The book had its origin in a series of letters Jacobs wrote between 1853 and 1861 to her friends in the abolitionist movement, notably a woman named Amy Post. Historically, there was some doubt about the authorship of the book and about the authenticity of the incidents it records. These doubts have largely been put to rest by the discovery of the letters.
The book indeed has elements of a disguise and of a novel. Jacobs never uses her real name but calls herself instead "Linda Brent." The other characters in the book are also given pseudonyms. Jacobs tells us in the Preface to the book (signed "Linda Brent") that she changed names in order to protect the privacy of indiduals but that the incidents recounted in the narrative are "no fiction".
Jacobs was born in slave rural North Carolina. As a young girl, she learned to read and write, which was highly rare among slaves. At about the age of 11 she was sent to live as a slave to a doctor who also owned a plantation, called "Dr. Flint" in the book.
Jacobs book describes well the cruelties of the "Peculiar Institution -- in terms of its beatings, floggings, and burnings, overwork, starvation, and dehumanization. It focuses as well upon the selling and wrenching apart of families that resulted from the commodification of people in the slave system. But Jacobs' book is unique in that it describes first-hand the sexual indignities to which women were subjected in slavery. (Other accounts, such as those of Frederick Douglass, were written by men.) The book is also unusual in that Jacobs does not portray herself entirely as a hero but describes the nature of the steps she took to avoid becoming the sexual slave of Flint. Thus, when Flint subjected her to repeated sexual advances from the time Jacobs reached the age of 16, she tried to avoid him by beginning an affair with a white, single attorney with whom she had two children. When Flint's advances persisted, Jacobs formed the determination to try to secure her freedom.
The bulk of the book describes how Jacobs hid precariously in a cramped attic for seven years waiting for the opporunity to secure her freedom. There are also accounts of her prior attempts to leave slavery, including a particularly harrowing account of several days in a place aptly named "Snaky Swamp."
Jacobs describes her relationship with her grandmother, a free black woman who was probably the major inspiration of her life. She also describes well her love and concern for her children, conceived through the liasion with the white attorney.
This book offers a rare perspective on American slavery as it affected women. It is also a testament, I think, to the value of literacy and knowledge as an instrument for winning and preserving free human life. Although this story is not pretty, it is a testament to human persistence in the face of adversity and to the precious character of human freedom.

Poignant

This autobiographical condemnation of the south's Peculiar Institution puts a face on the suffering of the enslaved. American history is full of accounts of slavery which tend to broad overviews of the institution, whereas this book is written by an escaped slave who does not flinch at sharing every detail of her miserable life. Unlike other narratives which distorted the slave's voice through the perspective of the interviewers/authors who were notorious for exaggerating the uneducated slaves' broken english, this book is largely Ms. Jacobs' own words. She was taught to read and write as a child by a kind mistress, so she was able to put her thoughts on paper with clarity that surprised many. Ms. Jacobs had an editor, but this book seems to be her unfiltered view of the world.
It is one thing to hear about how slaveholders took liberties with female slaves, it is quite another to read in stark detail about women being commanded to lay down in fields, young girls being seduced and impregnated and their offspring sold to rid the slaveholder of the evidence of his licentiousness. The author talks about jealous white women, enraged by their husbands' behavior, taking it out on the hapless slaves. The white women were seen as ladies, delicate creatures prone to fainting spells and hissy fits whereas the Black women were beasts of burden, objects of lust and contempt simultaneously. Some slave women resisted these lustful swine and were beaten badly because of it. It was quite a conundrum. To be sure, white women suffered under this disgusting system too, though not to the same degree as the female slaves who had no one to protect them and their virtue. Even the notion of a slave having virtue is mocked. The author rejected the slaveholder's advances and dared to hope that she would be allowed to marry a free black man who loved and respected her. Not only was she not allowed to marry him, she was forbidden to see him or speak to him again.
The author shows us the depth of a mother's love as she suffers mightily to see that her children are not also brought under the yoke of slavery. Though she was able to elude her odious master, she does take up with some other white man in hopes that he would be able to buy her freedom. Her "owner" refuses to sell her and tells her that she and her children are the property of his minor daughter. Her lover seems kind enough as he claims his children and offers to give them his name, and he did eventually buy them, though he failed to emancipate them to spare them from a life of forced servitude. Ms. Jacobs noted that slavery taught her not to trust the promises of white men. Having lived in town most of her life, Ms. Jacobs is sent to the plantation of her master's cruel son to broken in after she continues to refuses his sexual advances. She is resigned to this fate until she learns that her children -- who were never treated like slaves -- were to be brought to the plantation also. It is then that she takes flight.
After enduring 7-years of confinement in cramped quarters under the roof of her grandmother's house, the author escapes to the North which is not quite the haven she imagined. Still, it is better than the south, and she makes friends who buy her freedom leaving her both relieved and bitter that she is still seen as property to be bought and sold like livestock. In New York Ms. Jacobs is reunited with her children and a beloved brother who'd escaped a few years ago while accompanying his master -- her former lover -- to the free states.
There is no fairytale ending to this story because the author endures plenty of abuse and uncertainty even after she makes it to the North. She is hunted down by the relentless slaveowners who were aided by the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 and "The bloodhounds of the North." This is a wrenching account of this shameful period of American history, and should be required reading for all.

Still a moving testimony

I often believe it is easy to criticize nineteenth century Americans for not stepping up to the plate regarding the issue of slavery and race in America. Jefferson may well have agonized over the issue he called the "death knell of the nation" and which he labeled a "neccessary evil." Certainly he benefitted by the ownership of nearly 300 slaves, but he grew up in a world in which slavery was the norm. It takes a revoutionary and remarkable man to truly stand against the only world he knows and move to create a different world, so I usually defend Jefferson and his political vision which clearly transcended that world.
Reading Frederick Douglass, however, makes me wonder how anyone with firsthand knowledge of the institution could not see the obvious pain and cruelty which existed right in front of his or her eyes. Douglass's narrative, and particularly his descriptions of the slave trade in Baltimore and the obvious place of the whip (whether used or not) as the principal vehicle of social control argues most eloquently that though the slave system may have been a social norm, the blinders had to be unbelievably thick not to see the horrors that the institution wrought. The relationship of slave and master perpetuated a most un-American (at least in terms of our professed values--cf. Douglass's later antislavery orations) tyranny and oppression. Douglass's narrative testifies that our ancestors could have seen much more and done much more and that 600,000 lives and a subsequent 120 years of racial schism and pain was too much a price to bear for the peculiar institution.

Transformation through engaging/dialog with God

This is a truly excellent book in its approach to Christian transformation. It emphasizes engaging with God as the process for lasting change--not just performing Christian disciplines. Dave Takle is impressive in his transparency, humility and wisdom. The only area that I wished Dave had addressed is contribution of Spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 14) to Christian transformation, but this can be added by those who thus engage.

David’s book amplifies a related course, “Forming Change by Grace,” but each is stand-alone and self-contained. The book chapters are keyed to the course chapters/sessions. The book is more comprehensive, but the video course is more relationally engaging. Together they provide a “3D” effect—an added dimension whereby the participant can be taught, can practice, and can reflect on the amplified material in the book. As a course facilitator, the book gave me added information to customize the material to the specific needs of course participants—and to answer their questions.

I love how David Takle uses the analogy of rowing

Forming: A Work of Grace and the Dvd course Forming: Change by Grace, has been transformational in my life. I love how David Takle uses the analogy of rowing, living by our own efforts compared to sailing, positioning ourself to receive from God. The book and course are broken down beautifully as each chapter prepares one for the transformational journey of having a relationship, a conversational relationship with God. He addresses barriers, identity issues, fears and how we renew our mind for a changed life. Forming- is so practical and so profound. I love how maturity is addressed as this does not often come up in other material out there. And I have grown so much by the help of others where they are strong in my weak areas modeling for me so that I can become strong too.

The stories in this book are life giving and the Grace that I was able to receive by putting into practice the truths from this book has brought me to a
new place of freedom. I have put down my paddle and lifted my sail and as a result I can enjoy a relationship with God as He truly is, a loving God who is not mad at me when I mess up, but desires me to come to Him and receive whatever I need at the time from His table. Sometimes it is healing from a past experience, or getting rid of lies or faulty thinking, sometimes it is seeing someone else though God's eyes,and other times just enjoying His presence to receive His love for me. The beauty of this book and course is how it is all woven together as a way of life and a life long journey. David Takle reminds us through out this book to be aware of what is going on inside of us or how we respond to something, as this is a good
time to sit with God and work through it so we can be changed instead of stuck in a certain emotion. I only wish I had this book a long time again.

I recommend this book so highly and The Life Model. Thank you David Takle for being and instrument to the Body of Christ for Transformation of which I am one! Lucy S.

The Cycle of Civilization

This book is a bit sexist, but accurate. I read the original translation of the Russian version.

The author lays out in academic detail how women behave, why they do the things they do, why they sleep with particular men and why they "friend zone" other men. He has their decision process reduced to a flowchart algorithm, which in my experience is extremely accurate. He enumerates the conditions a women will go directly to sex with a man and the conditions where women will string a man along.

The author explains why women become fat when life is easy and society is prosperous. Obesity rates are approaching 70% in America. The average women today weights 40 pounds more than the average American women in the 60s. This book is extremely timely.

This is not a book on picking up women from a bar and banging them. This is an academic and historical thesis on gender roles and society. The author has several important insights, including that Christianity is not to be taken literally, but merely a prescription for society to follow in order to avoid repeating the mistakes that ended the prosperity and success of the Roman empire.

This book will give you a much wider perspective on society, religion and sex roles. The author notes a historical trend that has been eluded to by many historians. Matriarchal societies do not evolve beyond mud hut level. The reason there are no matriarchal societies is that non-patriarchal societies economically collapse. Societies and culture are in competition and the superior culture or civilization comes to dominate and assimilate the inferior or less effective civilizations.

The historical trend has been that societies that develop patriarchy and strongly enforced gender roles, out-compete matriarchal societies. Then life becomes easy. Women demand property rights, equal rights and begin working. They get it. Then women replace individual men with the state as providers. Then men op out of marriage and population decline begins and the society collapses.

The women's liberation movement is not new, but something that has occurred throughout history several times in cycles over the last three thousand years. Population collapse, economic decline and dark ages have been a reoccurring constant throughout human history.

This book lays the foundation for avoiding the cycles and historical trends that have destroyed all previously dominant civilizations and cultures on earth. This book is the cornerstone for understanding the economic and social decline of the west.

I read this book in its Russian version. It explains everything a modern man needs to know in his life. His role in the society and relationships. Absolutely recommended for ALL men, especially those who grew up in the West.

I did not buy this book, but i read this book in 2011 on my kindle. It is amazing! It just explains in plalin words all you need to know about women.

What is feminism, gender roles, and most important - how our society is wicked /poisoned with assumptions on men/women!

The books also explains the negative effect of sexual revolution; how the society and culture shape families in middle east, western and eastern societies - what is different etc

overall it is a must read.. 100%
