This book, together with the companion volume Poverty and Shame: Global Experiences, presents comparable evidence from the seven countries, challenges the conventional thinking that separates discussion of poverty found in the Global North from that prevalent in the Global South. It demonstrates that the emotional experience of poverty, with its attendant social and psychological costs, is surprisingly similar despite marked differences in material well-being and varied cultural traditions and political systems. In so doing, the volumes provide a foundation for a more satisfactory global conversation about the phenomenon of poverty than that which has hitherto been frustrated by disagreement about whether poverty is best conceptualised in absolute or relative terms.

All of the examples are discussed in relation to how the pattern will ultimately be sewn, so that the principles become more relevant to real sewn garments.

The first section of the book will answer questions such as:

• What are darts and how do they work with the curves of the body?
• What is seam allowance and how much should you add to your pattern?
• How are body measurements used to create accurate patterns?
• What are blocks or slopers and how are they different to patterns?
• What do the basic blocks look like?

The second half of the book shows a range of pattern making changes that can be learnt separately and can then be applied in different combinations to any garment patterns to suit your own pattern making needs. The reason why these pattern changes have been shown away from specific garments is to enable you to focus on the logic behind the pattern change, instead of becoming confused by the actual shape of the garment, or being distracted by working out body measurements.

All of the examples listed below are shown using both the cut and spread, and the pivot flat pattern making methods, and then also shown as a draped section of fabric on a mannequin, allowing you to really see the pattern changes as both a flat pattern, and in a more tangible 3D form. The examples that are covered in this section include:

• Adding and removing a seam line.
• Moving the position of a dart.
• Turning darts into seam lines and vice versa.
• Increasing and decreasing volume evenly.

Great for the Beginner and Advanced

This book is a must have if you want to understand how patterns work in ANY design. It is a must have with any manual on how to create patterns. It is essential to understand how and why darts are used and where, for example, and this book epxlains that as well as many other construction issues. Just buying a book on how to make patterns is just that, it tells you how and sometimes a little bit about the why. Understanding why you do something for a certain effect, or should I say what you should do for a certain effect is explained in this text. So, buy this IN ADDITION to ANY how to make pattern book.

I am a self teaching myself to be a fashion designer and have reservations on enrolling on a dedicated school of fashion due to financial constraints. I have bought almost 60 books to date about fashion, tailoring, sewing etc. Anything that would help me become a fashion designer. It is overwhelming to me since this is all new and I don't know where to begin. I believe I'm a good illustrator but I'm still refining on my skills. This book to me seems to be the next step towards constructing my illustrations. I love it because it talks about the very basic terminology and principles in pattern making and helps me adopt a set of skills that I can work with for my own designs. It is a book I would be using a lot and I know it will help me understand all the more complicated pattern books that I have so far. Much simple and straight forward guide for me.

Writing Spilled Milk was very emotional for me, as you can imagine. I wrote what I needed to get down on paper as fast as I could,and re-reading each chapter to edit and proofread was painful. As a self-published and first-time author, I know now that the first edition of Spilled Milk was not in its "best form"grammatically, but I also couldn't bear to have a professional editor or proofreader make changes to it. It was all still too raw and personal for me.

Several colleges and high schools have incorporated the novel into their lesson plans and I've received tons of feedback from my voracious fans- I knew I needed to come out with a more polished and professional edition that was appropriate for the education system, my fans, and in general. The second edition of Spilled Milk (2015) has been proofread by two amazing professionals in the industry and I am proud of the outcome. The story is exactly the same,so anyone with a first edition is not missing out on anything, but I had to accept the fact that "A writer I am, but an editor or proofreader I am not" applied to me in these circumstances. I hope that the second edition will allow people to continue to enjoy Spilled Milk in the way it was intended. Thank you all so much for your support in my journey as a writer and survivor.

K.L. Randis, author of bestselling novel Spilled Milk and thePillbillies series, started journaling at the age of six and had shortstories and poetry published by the time she was thirteen.She is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and a certifiedexpert in the field of domestic violence. How to accurately rate something so well written? I simply couldn't do it justice. I also couldn't put it down - which is why, after purchasing it last night, I still find myself in my PJ's at 4pm this afternoon. Enough said. Buy the book!

Great prep for those entering academia

Dr. Noor's book covers all the aspects of becoming a science faculty member: getting started, organizing a lab, managing a team, teaching, service, staying current, and maintaining life/work balance. Even for someone entering a teaching-heavy position (like me), sections that wouldn't seem relevant (managing a team) still contained bits of wisdom and advice that will help me during advising, or meeting with students. This book is great for graduate students and post-docs who anticipate a career in academia, and despite the title, I think this book will also be helpful for non-scientists entering academia. Easy (and fun) read, and offers advice most graduate students and postdocs would not otherwise receive! Great book!

Very, wise and useful little book.

Having just been awarded tenure in a Biology Department this past summer and then read this book, I found the advice to be succinct, wise and right on the mark. So impressed am I by its content and brevity that I have been buying copies and handing them out to my friends and colleagues who are entering or newly on the tenure-track.
