About the Author

Dr. Myron W. (Ron) Lustig is a renowned teacher, writer, scholar, and researcher. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, he had a distinguished career as a professor of communication at San Diego State University (SDSU). He is now an emeritus professor at SDSU, a past president of the Western States Communication Association (WSCA), and a recent recipient of WSCA’s Distinguished Service Award, its highest honor. He is a former editor of Communication Reports and is currently on the editorial boards of several intercultural communication journals. His teaching and research interests include intercultural, group, and interpersonal communication theories, methods, and processes. Dr. Lustig has written 9 books or book revisions, over 30 scholarly research articles, and numerous conference papers. During several recent spring semesters, he has gained additional practical and theoretical lessons about Intercultural Competence while teaching intercultural communication to undergraduate and graduate students at Shanghai International Studies University.

 

Dr. Jolene Koester was president of California State University, Northridge, one of the largest and most diverse campuses in the 23-campus California State University system, from 2000-2011. Under her leadership, the University improved graduation and retention rates, created a user-friendly campus, strengthened connections with the community, and increased fundraising. She also worked to make the University more learning-centered and focused on student success. Known nationally for her leadership in higher education, she currently serves on the board of directors of NAFSA, an association of international educators. She is also a past chair of the Board of Directors for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, a former president of the Western States Communication Association, and remains active in issues related to higher education access and leadership. After earning a Ph.D. in speech communication from the University of Minnesota, she began her academic career as a professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento, and served in a variety of administrative positions there, including provost and vice president for academic affairs, prior to her appointment as president of Cal State Northridge.

About the Author
Alison Jane Pickard is Head of Information and Communication Management and Director of Quality and Student Experience in the School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences at the University of Northumbria, UK, where she is also Program Leader for the new Professional Doctorate in Information Sciences. She teaches Research Methods in Information and Communication Management, Information Sciences, as well as other subject areas, and has project managed a number of JISC and AHRB research projects.

Excellent research methods text

Having taught research methods for library and information science for some years, and having spent a lot of time supervising and examining masters and PhD students, I was delighted when I found the first edition of Alison Pickard's book. This second edition builds on that and updates it. This text is sensible and practical without overlooking the metatheoretical assumptions underlying research activity. I particularly recommend the first chapter, which deals with major research paradigms in a straightforward, understandable way, laying a good basis for a discussion of the qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods methodologies. The methods discussed will be useful to researchers working in information science as well; as library studies.

Required reading for library researchers!

I found this book to be highly useful. As someone who is interested in research but who never had a formal research class, a book like this filled in a lot of the gaps for me. Although I read it from cover to cover in order to write a review for Catholic Library World, I know that I will be going back to it for ideas on expanding my research. Research Methods in Information includes practical exercises that will help the researcher learn the concepts that the author presents. Pickard has a clear and effective writing style. This is an excellent introduction to research methods, and could be used as a textbook in a research methodology course. It would make an excellent addition to any professional or personal library where there is interest in conducting research.

Vampire's Shade (1 of series)

I downloaded Vampire's Shade as a free book from Amazon. I had a love-hate relationship with this read. Part of it due to the cover which makes no sense with the plot-- what's with those wings and holey tights?

For some reason, Adele's personality, speech, and sayings reminded me of other young, vampire-slayer characters-- all attitude and self-reflection. I'll admit, I enjoyed the plot, and secondary characters, even if I found the protagonists unremarkable. The story was well-paced, and thoughtful. I think my dislike is the cookie-cutter heroine-- a compilation of other, similar vampire-slayers. I can't say I was too impressed with Connor, either. Nor did I ever really get a sense of the attraction between the two. Their relationship seemed contrived, rather than a natural progression of events.

There's a lot of potential here, and I'm willing to bet this is a series that will improve as the writer hits her stride with the characters.

New Editor Makes All the Difference

If I chose books based on cover photos, I'd never have downloaded Vampire's Shade. Could it be any cheesier? It looks like they're trying to hook hormonal high school boys.

This story is riddled with errors, more than I've seen in a long time, which is a real shame. I found myself constantly backtracking to try to deduce the author's meaning because of odd phrasing (ex: "It hadn't been a hell of a job, and there'd always been a little torn."), missing words and punctuation, and misused words. Clearly, this book wasn't edited before publication and it shows. Errors show up on every other page. Some people don't care about this stuff, and don't even notice it. It was a real problem for me. 2 stars as is.

For content only, Vampire's Shade deserves 3.5 stars, perhaps 4 stars. The story is involving and the characters were interesting. Parts of the plot could have been fleshed out more. We got only bare details about Connor's illegal business or why the master vampires wanted it. Since that was pivotal, more about that would have been helpful.

Neas may not be Jeaniene Frost or Laurell K. Hamilton, but her writing is very promising. I really hope she finds a good editor. I'd love to revise my review after editing.

p.s. I just looked at the listing, and amazingly, this book lists an editor. Unbelievable. They should be fired. And she should demand a refund.

ETA 6-8-16: I was just notified that this was re-edited, so I downloaded it again to take another look. What a difference a good editor makes! In the first chapter, I only noticed one misspelled word, one or two missing words, and one slightly awkward turn of phrase. Trust me, that's nothing compared to the original release. The story now has the polish it deserves, and it flows like it should. If you have the original, download the new one and compare. It's impressive.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4, because hey, the author responded and acted. Thanks on behalf of all of us.

What's a dead vampire or two.

There were a lot of mistakes in this book and some sentences were completely baffling with wording, some words were missing or spelled wrong and it was really hard to figure out what the author meant. The story itself was very interesting and intriguing so overall I thought it was a really great book if you can overlook the mistakes. I hope that someone proof reads the next book as I think Vivienne Neas has a talent for writing. I always give first time writers second chances especially when I see greatness to entertain readers like this author.

Great for commuters, I'm on the third level and I found these to be the best CD courses (I tried several) One good feature is, the teacher's voices come from separate channels, this is very helpful for clarification and better understanding. The female teacher's diction is not perfect (for Italian) but is pleasant, and last is that answers are repeated twice. The easiest way to learn is REPETITION, REPETITION, REPETITION. and this method is designed just like that. Same applies to my French course. I recommend these 100%.

I had purchased and used these Learn in Your Car series in other languages but because of the poor reviews for this one I got other ones instead and was disappointed. Finally I decided to get this one and realized I should have stuck with my original idea because these were far superior to Drivetime, Pimsleur, Italian for Dummies. Each Italian word or sentence is pronounced twice. As someone else mentioned, it is helpful to use another source of study as well, such as a grammar book or a class.

This audio system is excellent for learning Italian and not just for travelling. It is very helpful if you are just a tourist taking a few weeks to a month in Italy, BUT it really also covers a lot of every day content you would use living in Italy. I like how this system covers more than just your reserving a table and ordering food or asking for directions. Level one does all that also in this system, but we have family that live in Italy and when we speak with them, we don't talk about reserving tables! This system is very quick and moves along at a rapid pace. I recommend using workbooks, and/or course books and grammar books in addition to the listening of this audiobook. You should have a beginner grammar base in Italian before purchasing this level or set. I have used other Penton Overseas products in combination with this and this is one of the best so far.

It demonstrates that the emotional experience of poverty, with its attendant social and psychological costs, is surprisingly similar despite marked differences in material well-being and varied cultural traditions and political systems. In so doing, the volumes provide a foundation for a more satisfactory global conversation about the phenomenon of poverty than that which has hitherto been frustrated by disagreement about whether poverty is best conceptualised in absolute or relative terms.
