De-Centring Cultural Studies: Past, Present and Future of Popular Culture, by -

The academic resistance that cultural studies has encountered remains especially visible in Eastern and Southern European countries. One such example is Spain, where cultural studies is seen at best as an emergent research field. Hence the interest of this volume, conceived in Spain by an all-Spanish editorial team and written by a diverse range of authors who prove that, in spite of all difficulties, cultural studies continues to bloom even in Southern and Eastern Europe. The different chapters offer interdisciplinary insights into a wide selection of cultural materials whose relevance goes well beyond purely aesthetic issues. Altogether, the volume (1) provides interesting theoretical reflections on the subtle (yet arbitrary) borders between popular and canonical culture; (2) explores how the popular culture of yesteryear has influenced and inspired later canonical cultural materials; and (3) studies how the reception of, and representation in, popular culture can be accounted for from the crucially relevant perspectives of gender and age. This collection of essays studies and explores the connections between a wide range of materials, including relevant examples of classic and contemporary literature, Arthuriana, pop music and videos, political and mainstream film, newspaper advertising, television, and the phenomenon of the (trans)media star.

Great for the young hopeful...
By ILoveWood
A great book for intermediate students. My son is in his 3rd year and these short pieces are challenging enough to keep him on his toes but not so hard as to discourage. I'm also a violin student and I have to work a bit also. This is a great way to keep learning interesting.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1910 Excerpt: ... environment. To give material embodiment to moral ideas by such a method would nowadays be very artificial, and perhaps impossible; but in Dante's time everything was favourable to the attempt. We are accustomed to think of goods and evils as functions of a natural life, sparks struck out in the chance shock of men with things or with one another. For Dante, it was a matter of course that moral distinctions might be discerned, not merely as they arise incidentally in human experience, but also, and more genuinely, as they are displayed in the order of creation. The Creator himself was a poet producing allegories. The material world was a parable which he had built out in space, and ordered to be enacted. History was a great charade. The symbols of earthly poets are words or images; the symbols of the divine poet were natural things and the fortunes of men. They had been devised for a purpose; and this purpose, as the Koran, too, declares, had been precisely to show forth the great difference there is in God's sight between good and evil. InPlatonic cosmology, the concentric spheres were bodies formed and animated by intelligences of various orders. The nobler an intelligence, the more swift and outward, or higher, was the sphere it moved; whence the identification of "higher" with better, which survives, absurdly,to this day. And while Dante could not attribute literal truth to his fancies about hell, purgatory, and heaven, he believed that an actual heaven, purgatory, and hell had been fashioned by God on purpose to receive souls of varying deserts and complexion; so that while the poet's imagination, unless it reechoed divine revelation, was only human and not prophetic, yet it was a genuine and plausible imagination, moving on the lines of nat...

Monograph, rather than book
By travel light and smiling
It would be better if Amazon or someone could identify publications like this as monographs rather than books.
This is an article written by Santayana. It advances the position that the three poets summarize three major themes in western thinking. I enjoyed Santayana's turn of phrase, and turned back to Lucretius. I may re read Dante (maybe) and Goethe (doubtful)

Gateway to the great books
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
Original publication: 1910.

Here is Santayana's own (shall we call it?) non-apology for this short but substantial book:

... I am no specialist in the study of Lucretius; I am not a Dante scholar nor a Goethe scholar. I can report no facts and propose no hypotheses about these men which are not at hand in their familiar works, or in well-known commentaries upon them. My excuse for writing about them, notwithstanding, is merely the human excuse which every new poet has for writing about the spring. They have attracted me; they have moved me to reflection; they have revealed to me certain aspects of nature and of philosophy which I am prompted by mere sincerity to express, if anybody seems interested or willing to listen.

This is a great book with a paradox at the heart of it. On the one hand, Santayana was probably the only man in America, the only man at Harvard even, who had the urbanity and breadth of knowledge to write about Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe (with footnotes in Latin, Italian, and German). On the other hand, who but an American could view the great national poets of Rome, Italy, and Germany as his own inheritance? And with such panache:

... Because my instinct taboos something, the whole universe, with insane intensity, shall taboo it for ever. This infatuation was inherited by Dante, and it was not uncongenial to his bitter and intemperate spleen. Nevertheless, he saw beyond it at times. Like many other Christian seers, he betrays here and there an esoteric view of rewards and punishments, which makes them simply symbols for the intrinsic quality of good and evil ways. The punishment, he then seems to say, is nothing added; it is what the passion itself pursues; it is a fulfilment, horrifying the soul that desired it.

On the one hand, I don't think this book is a substitute or shortcut to three major poets. On the other, I don't think a reader should feel daunted by the scope of this book- one needs no mastery of ALL of Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe (given that, one could write such a book instead of read it)- that's why I call THREE PHILOSOPHICAL POETS a gateway.

Documents, such as drawings, memos and specifications, form an essential function in the design and construction industry. Throughout the lifecycle of a built asset, starting from an initial design idea, right through to a final built form and its ongoing management, thousands, even millions of documents can be used to convey various forms of information to a range of interested parties. In many ways, therefore, the success of a design, or construction-based company, relies upon an understanding of the use of documents, as well as the technologies and techniques that are used to create them.

The Digital Document provides an extensive background to the issues and technologies surrounding this very important topic. It examines a technical subject in an insightful manner that is neither intimidating nor confusing, even to the novice computer user. By introducing the subject through a series of preliminary reviews of current practices and essential computing technologies, the reader is able to better appreciate the benefits and capabilities of a wide range of digital document types. This book explores the role of documents in a professional practice, examines the components, capabilities, viability, and use of digital documents in the design and construction industry, and identifies and explains many of the
standards in use today.

In order to facilitate a better understanding of digital document technologies, a number of essential reviews are provided including:
- the definition and purpose of a document
- how documents are typically used by design professionals
- the nature of the digital document environment
- the data types which make up digital documents

Uhh...where is the information????
By M.B.
I was actually hoping to find a useful book that would help me implement PDM software, or at least provide guidelines and recommendations. After reading this book, I feel like I could have written it (even though I know next to nothing about the subject).
It is so general, the subject is painted with very broad soft strokes. What about costs, implementation schedules, performance, real-world implementations, difficult release paths, conflicting requirements???
Do *not* spend the money on this book. Seriously, you will be dissapointed. It is hardly worth a fraction of the cost (pick it up used, if you must).

Rivalry and Central Planning: The Socialist Calculation Debate Reconsidered, by Don Lavoie

Rivalry and Central Planning, first published in 1985, is a vital contribution to the scholarly literature in contemporary comparative systems, the economics of socialism, and the Austrian school of economics. It disputes the commonly accepted view of both the nature of the “socialist calculation debate” of the 1930s and the lessons to be derived from it.
Whereas many socialist and Austrian participants in the debate tended to talk in polar terms of central planning versus the market, the chief result of the controversy has been that the neoclassical “market-socialist” position is usually taken to represent a successful synthesis of planning and markets. Don Lavoie, however, argues that the famous debate has been largely misunderstood.
The debate can no longer be viewed as a dated battle between extreme positions that have now become comfortably reconciled, as Lavoie insists that market socialists did not answer the Austrian school’s chief concerns about the challenges associated with rationally allocating resources. Rather, the lesson is that planning and markets are fundamentally alternative coordination mechanisms and that the attempt to combine them tends to subvert the operation of each.

Praise for the Book

“When it was first published in 1985, Don Lavoie’s revisionist account of the socialist calculation debate immediately became a seminal document in the Austrian revival. The book not only demonstrates the flaws of central planning but also shows why so
many economists, in thrall to equilibrium theorizing, missed the essential points of the Austrian critique. The Mercatus Center’s reissuing of this important book is very welcome indeed.”
—Bruce Caldwell, Director of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University

“Rivalry and Central Planning was an important book when it was first published in 1985, and 30 years later it is still well worth scholarly attention. As the first detailed examination of the economic calculation debate from an Austrian perspective, Lavoie not only demonstrated the shortcomings of the socialist position but also provided a critique of much of mainstream economic theory. His emphasis on
the central importance of rivalry among competitors captured the central feature of a market economy that leads to innovation and economic growth. It is a classic, and I am delighted that this book will now once again be in print for a new generation of economists.”
—Karen Vaughn, author of Austrian Economics in America: The Migration of a Tradition

The Real Calculation Debate...
By James F. Mueller
This book is a very detailed study of the entire history of the socialist calculation debate. This debate began with Von Mises' claim that a socialist society (state ownership of capital goods) cannot allocate resources efficiently because of the absence of competitive market prices.

All the participants in this debat would agree with this characterization of Mises' challenge, but, as Lavoie argues, they would emphasize different points. Lavoie wants to correct these many different interpretations by drawing attention to the importance Mises attached to the concept of "competition" --- what Lavoie calls rivalry.

Lavoie uses the word rivalry because economic theory has a peculiar idea of the nature and character of competition. For economists, competition is a Pareto-optimal state of affairs in which all prices converge to equilibrium and market agents are act in the capacity of passive price takers. Dynamic, rivalrous, entrepreneurial price war behavior are generally seen by the profession as being crude representations of pure and perfect competition.

This understanding of competition is responsible, Lavoie argues in this book, for the confusion that surrounds the calculation debate. Mises and his followers (Robbins and Hayek) had a different view of the essential features of a competitive market economy than did their interlocutors. For the market socialists, there is a formal similarity between capitalism and socialism, enabling them to argue that socialism could reproduce the results of perfect competition, thus making the free and unhampered market unnecessary for the generation of efficient market prices.

That is the basic thesis of Lavoie's book. The Austrians have a dynamic idea of markets and competition while the market socialists (Lange and Taylor) had a static understanding of markets.

This book is also valuable because it discusses the role of Mises' challenge in the context of Marxian theory as well. In fact, Lavoie argues that the more interesting confrontation occurred between Mises and the Marxians rather than the subsequent debates between Hayek and the market socialists because both Marx and Mises emphasized disequilibrium. For Marx, the market was not only competitive and rivalrous, but also anarchic and chaotic. Marx believed that central planning (unity and coherence) could eliminate this independence among producers and bring order to the market. It is in this context that Mises' challenge can (and should!) be appreciated.

For Austrians who have not yet read this book, I would encourage you to do so for this chapter on Marx and the one on Mises that follows it. The rest of the book should be old hat for Austrians.

I gave this book 5 stars because it was published in 1985 and covered all of the relevant arguments up to that time from a distinctly Austrian perspective. However, Austrians cannot make these sorts of arguments forever. The market socialists are now gone and replacing them are new, well-trained and equally dynamic professional economists who have challenged the efficacy of market prices on novel grounds. People like Joseph Stiglitz, Bowles and Gintis have made challenging arguments against the market without invoking the concept of equilibrium. Austrians have erred by responding to these criticisms by resorting to the socialist calculation debate because, as Lavoie has shown, this debate is confused because both sides had different ideas of the market. The socialists were general equilibrium theorists while the new challengers are not.

This book is of historical interest (and in this respect is immensely interesting), but I think Austrians need to move on. Of course I cannot fault Professor Lavoie for this so I decided to give him 5 stars for this excellent book.
